Halitosis (Bad Breath)
By: David D. Rolf II, D.M.D., M.Sc. Director of Education Dental1.org
Diagnosis and Treatment
Good oral hygiene with brushing, flossing, and using a tongue cleaner, along with a mouthwash recommended by a dentist or pharmacist helps prevent and correct halitosis. Ninety percent of bad breath is caused by bacteria and dead cells on the back of the tongue. Thus tongue scrapers are useful in minimizing this problem. Drinking plenty of water, eating fresh vegetables, avoiding too much coffee, brushing after ingesting milk products, fish and meat, and getting regular dental cleanings and checkups are all steps patients can take to control halitosis.
