Anxiety (Dental Fear and Phobia)
By: David D. Rolf II, D.M.D., M.Sc. Director of Education Dental1.org
Take Action
See your dentist for a consultation and discuss your anxiety. Be specific and detailed about the anxiety, fear or phobia, such as fear of pain, fear from negative past dental experiences, fear of loss of control, or any other issues or problems you have experienced related to dental care. If needed, make notes prior to the consultation and make a copy of the notes to give to the dentist during the consult.
The dentist may have a dental fear questionnaire for you to fill out – complete the form in detail and don’t be ashamed. Make sure the dentist listens to you and is willing to take the time and effort during the consultation to understand your anxiety, fear or phobia. Be prepared to pay the dentist a fee for this consultation because this is considered a service. Make sure the dentist discusses the plan with you prior to treatment.
