Upper and Lower Rehabilitation

This is a 52-year-old female with a severe debilitated dentition due to years of dental neglect. As a result of discomfort and inability to masticate, she was forced to eat a soft diet. This type of diet is usually high in carbohydrates, saturated fats, trans-fats, and cholesterol. This resulted in her being overweight, with high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

She was restored with a lower hybrid fixed-removable denture retained and supported by six Straumann implants. The upper was restored with a bar retained by four Straumann implants and a palate-less removable denture. The maxillary bar and mandibular frameworks were both fabricated utilizing CAD/CAM technology. As a result of her implant reconstruction, she was once again able to eat a healthy diet. This resulted in an immediate loss of weight, lowering of her total cholesterol and blood pressure. She was able to go off of her blood pressure medication. She said: “This is the first time I can smile in years, I am so happy.” More importantly, this dramatic improvement in her overall health as a result of dental implants should add years and quality to her life.
